On October 22, 2009, Microsoft released the Windows Server 2008R2 operating system... concurrent with the Windows 7 release. Windows Server 2008R2 is the successor to Windows Server 2008 as well as to the venerable workhorse Windows Server 2003 operating system.
The R2 version includes many new features and enhancements such as
virtualization support for clients and servers using Hyper-V technology as well as virtualization for
remote desktop services, tight integration with the Windows 7 client OS for enhanced client PC
connectivity, a new version of the Internet Information Services web server IIS 7.5, and more.
The Windows 7 integration features greatly enhance the ability of mobile workers to connect with the office Server using Direct Access, a new technology that replaces the traditional VPN connection. Direct Access allows "always on" connectivity between the remote computer and the Server... simplifying connections and allowing corporate IT to update and manage the remote computer.
